The man who was branded a "Jackass" by the most powerful man in the world is back with his 5th studio album and after the whole Taylor Swift fiasco a weaker person probably would have took a longer break or come back with an apology album but not Kanye. The message that My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy sends out is "I am me, take it or leave it" and what a great message that is. Kanye is one of the best out there at what he does, he drops amazing beats, uses brilliant samples and delivers some brilliant wordplay and that is exactly what he does in MBDTF.
One thing that is instantly noticable is how many more collaborations he has compared to he previous couple of albums and he drafts in some of the finest artists around at the moment, Jay-Z, Kid Cudi, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, John Legend and Elton John all feature, just to name a few, in fact 14 other artists provide additional vocals on just one song. This is a testiment to the power and respect in commands in the Music industry.
Dark Fantasy is a fitting introduction to the album, featuring a charming narration that slowly changes in to a twisted voice before moving on to a choir like sample, the beat will have you nodding along and you'll no doubt want to sing along to the lyrics. The next song Gorgeous features a nifty guitar riff in the back and a chorus from Kid Cudi whose voice goes so well with it. There is some great lyrics in this song from Kanye as well, he even so effortlessly makes a reference to that infamous South Park episode.
We then have Power, a song that just seems perfect for Kanye, "oh, ai ai" is sung all the way through the song making for high tempo beat that brilliant in it's simplicity much like Love Lockdown was, Kanye accompanys this perfectly with an excellent flow. The album then moves of the All of the Lights, an intelude comes just before the song itself, a violin and piano plays and moves so perfectly on to the full song that as mentioned earlier features 14 other artists provided vocals throughout. The most noticable being Rihanna who offers a memorable chorus among others singing along, Kid Cudi and Fergie also follow up Kanye's final verse before the song moves on to the epic finish featuring the likes of Alicia Keys, Elton John and The Dream. The song is extrememly well put together but you can't take away a very good vocal performance from Kanye in that song although it wouldn't be wrong to say Rihanna very much steals the show in All of the Lights.
The next 3 songs that follow are very rap focused and so it's no surprise to see Jay-Z drafted in for a couple of them. Monster features a brilliant chorus where Kanye wants to see you with your hands up, a true club banger, helped with some brilliant raps from Kanye West, Jay-Z and Nicki Minaj. So Appalled slows the tempo back down, a Swizz Beatz hook introduces the song well, that also helps break up the various rap verses. The next song Devil in a New Dress with Rick Ross features probably my favourite sample of the album, very much old school Kanye with a soulful voice singing behind the rapping that starts with Kanye before the beat dissapears for a synthetic guitar riff and the song moves on to Rick's segment.
The next song is the epic Runaway featuring Pusha T, the song in which Kanye most openly claims to be a bit of a "Jackass". The chorus is incredibly catchy, the lyrics are brilliant and meanigful and the beat is simplistic but memorable. The song could easily end 3 minutes before it does but the beat is so brillinat you'll be glad it doesn't, much like Say You Will on his last album you can find yourself getting lost in the beat. Hell of a Life moves closer to the style of song that started the album, a rap and beat that gets your head nodding along with an autotuned chorus that you'll find yourself singing along to.
Blame Game with John Legend is next up, about a troublesome relationship that has been and gone, as you may expect Legend offers a soulful vocal performance with the calm piano beat, Kanye almost speaks the words with such meaning before finishing off singing the chorus with some vocals to rival that of John Legend's. The song is then played out with an odd phone message featuring Chris Rock that I at first found tedious but after a second listen I began to love it for it's hilarity and it's an important part of the song. Lost in the World is last real song of the album, starting with a calm and beatiful autotuned performance from Bon Iver before the beat picks up and the chorus becomes more choir like. Kanye only has one verse for rapping but he also backs up Bon Iver with the singing of the chorus, the song then seemlessly moves on to Who Will Survive in America, a short spoken piece that sees the album out well as a conclusion, something any epic like MBDTF needs.
Kanye West has certainly never done things by halves and My Dark Beautiful Twisted Fantasy is no exception, it's an epic musical journey that never lets up and is the perfect example to show that despite how much of a Jackass he may be, Kanye can still make great music.

Ne-Yo - Libra Scale
Ne-Yo is easily one of my favourite artists, over the years he has produced a number of fine albums as well as writing some of the biggest hits of the noughties so when he released his 4th studio album I was certainly excited, everything this guy touches is golden.
He's back with Libra Scale which attempts to tell a story by linking together each of the 10 songs that were recorded, a bold move in many people's eyes but by no means a stupid one in my view. Any great album will follow a set path, playing different songs with a similar mood, one after the other before moving on the next theme, something seen in his last album in fact, Year of the Gentleman was definitely varied but each song flowed perfectly on to the next one and that's very much the case with Libra Scale as well. However attempting to tell the story of "The Gentlemen," a group of binmen turned super heroes and Ne-Yo's complicated relationship with a women that eventually becomes his nemesis helps the overall sturucture.
We start with the upbeat hits, "Champagne Life" and "Makin' a Movie" all about living the good life thanks to the Gentlemen's new found powers. Both songs are the kind of tunes that will get you bopping your head when listening through headphones regardless of whether you may be in public or not. The tempo then slows with "Know your Name," "Telekinesis" and "Crazy Love," all songs about the budding relationship between Ne-Yo and this girl, they're songs that paint a picture of an instant connection.
The story moves on with "One in a Million" and "Genuine Only", lifting the tempo a little bit to give the impression a happy relationship between the pair. The 2 songs are perhaps my favourites on the album, for me they stand out the most, being some of the more original sounding songs on the album. I use the word original as the next two songs "Cause I said So" and "Beautiful Monster" sound a lot less fresh, I recall describing Beautiful Monster as a poor man's "Closer" back when the single was released, by no means a bad song just a little too similar and not as strong. None the less they're both songs that'll get you dancing with the excellent beats and lyrics. These two songs tell the story of how Ne-Yo begins to see the girl for what she really is and how hard it is to come to terms with this new attitude. Finally the album comes to a bit of an anti climax with "What Have I Done?" A song that slows the tempo right back down once again but with no real substance, the lyrics tie up the story well but it's the type of song you may still find yourself skipping when it comes uo on shuffle.
On comparison to previous albums Libra Scale is certainly worthy of the Ne-Yo brand but as a follow up to Year of the Gentleman it's slightly dissapointed, a statement that may be a little unfair as his 3rd album was of an incredibly high quality with more variation and memorable songs. Libra Scale is certainly worth a purchase as it is an enjoyable album that tells a story well but it never manages to reach the heights of his previous efforts, but still compared to many other R&B singers best efforts it's a cut above.

Song of the Week
Another week another hits album, this time from perhaps the UK's best R&B act Lemar. His new Hits album is released this Monday and it's anotehr I would recommend anyone should have due to the large amount of great songs on there.
Like any hits album it has a few new ones only one of which I've heard which is "The Way Love Goes" but that's not the chosen song, instead I've decided to go for one of his lesser known ones which was also on his last album "The Reason".
The song is called "Mayday" and it's one of his slower songs. It's quite simple and only really features strings, piano and of course his voice and that's where the beauty lies in this song, a great vocal performance with some great lyrics using a pilot on the field as a metaphor for a lost love. With a catchy chorus and a climatic finish this really deserves to be on an album named "The Hits"

Song of the Week
This song was released late in last year and is from one of my favourite bands and after hearing it pop up on the advert for a new movie (which doesn't look all that but kudos for the song) I've started listening to it a lot more.
The song is "Just Say Yes" by the brilliant Snow Patrol which came as one of the new singles from their hits collection "Up to now" which I would recommend to any music lover because over the years these chaps from Ireland have served up some amazing songs, some more epic and well known than others and some real hidden gems.
As for Just say Yes, it's not one of their most epic songs but it's a beautiful treat for the ears with it's synthetic beat, uplifting sound and even nicer lyrics. I really feel it's something different to what you'd usually expect from Snow Patrol but it's a good sign of things to come when they do work on their next full album.

Delphic - Acolyte
What? No attempt at a pun in the title? Nah, I'd be here all day if I tried to think of something plus the puns aren't always seen anyway (still doubt anyone got the risque title for the Chris Brown review).
So who are Delphic I hear you ask. They're a band from Manchester so they automatically have a place in my CD collection and their style is what is described as alternative dance which is quite apt to be honest, it's a sort of new techo indie sound which they deliver, think The Klaxons except good.
I first heard of the band when their debut single and perhaps my favourite from the album "Counterpoint" on the soundtrack for the latest Pro Evolution Soccer game and to say it's a suitable song for the game may give you an idea of exactly how they sound. Another one of my favourites "Red Lights" is a good example of Delphic's style with a chilled out Trance style before building up in to a full tempo dance song.
"Clarion Call" which starts the album off is another example of a song building up and gives the album a great start. It then goes on to one of the singles "Doubt" which whilst keeping within their style you can understand why they went ahead and released it as it sounds like something which can appeal to a mass audience however it still maintains it's new age sound. The same can be said for songs like "Halycon" and "Submission" which go for a more traditional band set up only substituting the bass for synthetic sounds.
To top it off there's "This Momentary" which has a great use of drums and offers an alternative hi tempo dance sound. The near vocal free "Acolyte" which is a more chilled out sound much like the final song on the album "Remain" which is accompanied by a nice bit of Piano in the background.
So overall Delphic's debut album is what I suspect will be an unappreciated gem however after being named as one of the new bands to look out for in 2010 it's clear that they have something. They have quite a unique sound that you can both dance and chill out to and I don't think anyone who enjoys music can come away unhappy.
